An Iowa town is closer to having legal golf car use on the streets.
The city council of Bellevue, Iowa passed the first reading of an ordinance that would allow golf cars on city streets with some restrictions.
According to the Bellevue Herald Leader, Bellevue Police Chief Bud Schroeder offered some rules and regulations after studying other towns that have allowed golf cars:
- A golf car with a bench seat can transport no more than two people and one with two bench seats cannot transport more than four;
- Golf cars may only be operated during daylight hours and only on city streets, not highways;
- A driver must have a valid driver’s license and be at least 18.
- There will be a speed limit of 25 miles per hour.
According to the newspaper, councilmembers added a rule that golf cars must have adequate brakes and a bicycle safety flag. Headlight and taillight mandates were waved as the city does not plan to allow night driving.
At this magazine’s deadline, the ordinance still had to go before the council two more times, when members of the public would be given their say. Mayor Roger Michels is on the record as against the measure.
