FLOW-RITE CONTROLS HONORED AS ONE OF THE 2009 “MICHIGAN 50 COMPANIES TO WATCH”
Flow-Rite Controls has been recognized as one of the 2009 “Michigan 50 Companies to Watch,” an awards program sponsored by the Edward Lowe Foundation and presented by Michigan Celebrates Small Business.

“In today’s economy, Companies to Watch has become a real game changer,” says Penny Lewandowski, director of entrepreneurship development at the Edward Lowe Foundation, a nonprofit operating foundation based in Michigan. “It changes the conversation from slow-growth, layoffs and closing, to companies that are expanding, hiring, and moving beyond traditional markets.”

“Presenters of the Michigan program recognized this potential since its inaugural year, five years ago,” Lewandowski says. “With a vow to find 50 new companies to celebrate each year, Michigan 50 Companies to Watch is now 250 strong. These are the companies that sustain Michigan through tough times and are transforming how the rest of the nation views the state.”

As a vertically integrated company, Flow-Rite Controls designs, manufactures, and markets fluid control devices that are widely used in lead acid batteries, recreational fishing boats, laboratory and medical devices. Flow-Rite is continuing to expand its product line up to include refill valves for tire inflation as well as a new line of fasteners that will be used broadly across all industries.

When asked about being selected, Flow-Rite’s President Dan Campau said, “Our team is excited to have been selected as a Michigan 50 to Watch Company. It’s nice to know that even though our work is buried in the bilge of a boat or under a forklift seat, it still gets noticed. We are excited to explore our many growth opportunities with both our existing and upcoming new products. In anticipation (of this growth) we have just completed a 49K square foot addition that doubled the size of our facility. Through our business growth across the country and in international markets, we are proud to call Michigan our home.”

Companies nominated for the “Michigan 50 Companies to Watch” list must be second-stage companies, defined as having 6 to 99 full time equivalent employees and generating $750,000 to $50 million in annual revenue or working capital from investors or grants. In addition, the companies must be privately held and headquartered in Michigan.

GOLF CAR VANDALISM, MISUSE PLAGUE OPERATORS, SURVEY FINDS
Nearly three-quarters of golf course operators surveyed reported some vandalism or misuse of their golf car fleets, at a price tag estimated at more that $8 million per year, according to a report prepared by Club Car.

Some of the key statistics unveiled in the recently issued whitepaper included:
72 percent of courses reported vandalism or golfers playing extra holes without paying for them
27 percent of operators reported retrieving a golf car from a lake or creek
48 percent reported unauthorized use of golf cars
42 percent reported golf cars being driven in unauthorized areas
21 percent reported theft of golf cars

Several insurance providers contacted for the survey cited the costs resulting from golf car vandalism or misuse, both actual damages and lost revenue as well as higher insurance rates for courses which do not take steps to protect their golf car fleet from vandals.

GOLF INDUSTRY SHOW RANKED 77th LARGEST OF THE YEAR
The Golf Industry Show received the No. 77 ranking from Tradeshow Week magazine for its 2008 event in Orlando, up from No. 82 the previous year.

Tradeshow Week compiles data submitted from trade shows and ranks the 200 largest annual trade shows in the United States. Rank is determined by net square feet of paid exhibit space. Show listings include: net square feet, number of exhibiting personnel, space rates and location. The ranking covers the 2008 calendar year only. There are approximately 3,500 trade shows that occupy 5,000 square feet or more of exhibit space each year in the United States.

Overall attendance at the 2008 Golf Industry Show in Orlando was a record 25,737, and there was a record 10,553 qualified buyers – those who can directly influence a purchase decision. The trade show itself was the largest ever with 965 companies represented with exhibits covering a record 300,900 square feet.

“This ranking is a great measuring stick against other trade shows outside of the golf industry and provides positive feedback for our exhibitors,” show officials noted. “We look forward to next year’s show in San Diego, the formal addition of the USGA, and the format enhancements that will be so beneficial to everyone involved in the event.”

The Golf Industry Show is presented by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCAA), National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA), and Club Managers Association of America (CMAA), along with participating partners Golf Course Builders Association of America (GCBAA), American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA), and the National Golf Foundation (NGF). The United States Golf Association (USGA) will join the Golf Industry Show beginning in 2010 as a participating partner. Responding to member and exhibitor desires to preserve more of their weekends, the trade show portion will be conducted Wednesday and Thursday (Feb. 10-11), with virtually no competing events.
