The Oxford Board of Aldermen unanimously passes an ordinance to regulate golf cars and low-speed vehicles on city streets, reflecting the city’s commitment to adapting transportation regulations while prioritizing safety.
In a proactive move to address evolving transportation dynamics, the Oxford Board of Aldermen has approved an ordinance to govern the usage of golf cars and low-speed vehicles on city streets. This decision, reached unanimously during their recent meeting, underscores the city’s dedication to enhancing public safety through updated regulations.
The newly enacted ordinance brings significant changes to Oxford’s existing traffic regulations, notably redefining the classifications of these vehicles. “Golf Cart” has been eliminated from the city’s Code of Ordinances’ definitions section, replaced with more precise categorizations. Type I Golf Carts are now designated as recreational vehicles equipped with essential safety features, while Type II Golf Carts are designated exclusively for use on golf courses.
Moreover, the ordinance provides a clear definition of low-speed vehicles, describing them as four-wheeled vehicles with top speeds ranging between 20 to 25 miles per hour. Operational guidelines outlined in the ordinance specify that Type I Golf Carts and low-speed vehicles are permitted on city streets with speed limits below 30 miles per hour. However, Type II Golf Carts face stricter operational restrictions, confined to specific residential zones and restricted times of the day.
Individuals seeking to operate these vehicles within Oxford’s city limits must possess a valid driver’s license and adhere to manufacturer-specified seating capacities. Additionally, mandatory registration with the Oxford Police Department is required for all Type I Golf Carts and low-speed vehicles, accompanied by a $50 registration fee.
To ensure clarity and compliance, the city has released a comprehensive list of streets where Type II Golf Carts are permitted to operate. This list, including thoroughfares such as Rosemont, Augusta Drive, Grand Oaks Boulevard, and Majestic Oaks Drive within designated subdivisions, will be maintained by the chief of police and officially recorded by the city clerk.
