A Daytona Beach man’s ill-conceived attempt to impress resulted in a nightmarish ordeal, culminating in a harrowing accident that left a teenager injured and traumatized.
Malik Brockett, 28, found himself behind bars on charges of aggravated child abuse after he commandeered a John Deere TS Gator vehicle, akin to a golf car, in a misguided attempt to “pick up girls.” The escapade took a dire turn when the stolen vehicle overturned, causing severe injuries to a 17-year-old passenger.
According to Daytona Beach police, the ill-fated incident unfolded at at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Main Street. Responding officers discovered the injured teenager lying on the sidewalk, his leg shattered from the impact.
Brockett confessed to authorities that he and the teen stumbled upon the vehicle with the aid of pliers, which were used to start the vehicle’s ignition switch. Despite knowing it was stolen property, they embarked on a joyride to the beachside area, unaware of the impending tragedy that awaited them.
Emergency responders swiftly transported the injured teen to Halifax Health Medical Center for urgent medical attention. With no family identified, the teen was entrusted to the care of the Department of Children and Families, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
